YORK & HULL METHODIST DISTRICT
Spring Synod 1 April, 2017 – Manor CE Academy York
The York and Hull District Spring Synod 2017 was hosted by the Tadcaster, Thirsk & Northallerton, Ripon & Lower Dales and the York Circuits, held at the Manor CE Academy, York on Saturday 1 April. On arrival at the Academy you could not miss the bright purple bus which played a big part within the Step Up Group for the day. More details below.
The 2017 Spring Synod was opened by the Revd Stephen Burgess who reminded Synod that this was the final meeting under the name of the York and Hull District.
Opening worship, which was very apt for April fool’s Day, was led by Revds. Ruth Parry, David Godfrey and Steve Barlow.
Stephen reported on the Implementation Group decisions and highlighted District Officer appointments planned for the new Yorkshire North & East District from 1 September 2017.
Meaningful discussions about ceasing worship at 5 of the District churches were held and we remembered the Local Preachers who had died during the last year with a 2-minute silence.
The afternoon session opened with an encouraging report from Deacon Jill Taylor with regard to Hull International House which now has 13 nationalities housed in the house. Running Alpha courses and other opportunities. Seen as God’s gift for mission.
Steve Leah gave a brief & interesting update report on the recent JPIT Yorkshire launch held in Leeds, and Revd Graham Jones updated Synod on the work of the DMLN network, now fully staffed. Revd Helen Harrell spoke about the Unite Faith Workers Union.
The Lay people and the Superintendents thanked the Revd Stephen Burgess for his colleagueship and leadership as Chair of the York and Hull District and wished him and Barbara well for the future.
Closing worship was led by Step Up involving participants’ young and old reading in pairings - reflecting on God’s calling.
