It’s that time of the year when we are looking for suitable candidates to become one of our Commissioners. There are 25 members who serve for a term of three years, and in the last 12 months, three people have stepped down. The CRC is committed to strengthening the breadth and balance of representation on the Commission. We need people concerned to see the Church reaching out in communities who are keen to influence the public agenda and political life. The Commission meetings are every quarter, although membership also gives an opportunity to take a greater part in CRC work and we especially value having members who are prepared to commit time and help shape this organisation at this time. If you would like further information, please contact Janet Bryer at CRC or look at the CRC website. The deadline for applications is 31 October 2010. Applications received will be submitted to a meeting of the Regional Church Leaders Reference Group and applicants will be informed of their decision by the end of November.

Upland Report. The government’s rural watchdog has called for a new strategy to revitalise England’s upland communities. The Commission for Rural Communities said the English uplands underpinned a wealth of natural and cultural assets. But they were failing to realise their potential – despite their ability to support a low carbon future and green economy. Commission chairman The Revd. Dr. Stuart Burgess said: “Our inquiry has focused on the uplands’ potential as well as the challenges needing to be tackled.” Problems included a lack of affordable housing, poor mobile phone coverage and slow broadband connections. A new approach should balance economic potential with environmental needs, said the commission report published on Tuesday (15 June). Hill farmers and land managers should be rewarded for managing national assets in harmony with developing businesses, it recommends. The report says the government should appoint a single individual responsible for overseeing a new uplands strategy. Supporting farmers alone is insufficient, warns the document. Upland sustainability also depends on a thriving business sector, it adds. New initiatives are needed to bring together the public and private sectors to create markets for natural resources, such as carbon and water. This would benefit local communities, the report says. The full document can be downloaded here (pdf).
Bigconversionyorkshire. In the aftermath of Yorkshire Forward, the government is setting up Local Enterprise Partnerships – LEPs. Local Authorities have to submit proposals by September 6th. It is likely there will be al least four in Yorkshire and Humber based on city regions – Leeds (west Yorkshire plus other bits), Sheffield (South Yorkshire plus other bits), Humber, (not clear whether one or two here), and York and North Yorkshire. It is also proposed to have a Yorkshire and Humber wide Enterprise Partnership. This proposal has come largely from the business community who saw the benefit of a Yorkshire and Humber wide body lobbying for tourism, inward investment etc. They would like people to support this initiative by signing up on the website – see http://www.bigconversationyorkshire.org/. The website explains why and what and how to support the proposals. You can also see this on the pdf attached. They want people to have signed up by the end of August so that proposals can go in alongside local LEP proposals.
Significance and Change: The Third United Reformed Church Yorkshire Synod Historic Churches Conference on Saturday 23rd October. This Yorkshire Synod Conference follows earlier successful events which helped members of many churches in Yorkshire and beyond look again at their buildings as assets for mission. Under the heading of 'SIGNIFICANCE AND CHANGE' it will examine the role of the historic church building in modern mission, illustrated by case studies from rural North Yorkshire and Kent. Because, following recent government policy changes, the concept of 'significance' now has a central role in considering how a church building can be adapted for mission, ample time will be given to studying the implications of the new arrangements for churches. Full details from http://www.urcyorkshire.org.uk/cf.html The event held at Silcoates School, Wrenthorpe,Wakefield, WF2 0PD with start at 9:30am and include speakers such as David Peel: Chairman The Keld Resources Centre;Linda Monckton: Head of Places of Worship Research English Heritage and Kathy Gambell: The Hope Centre, Sheerness. Though of relevance particularly to churches occupying listed buildings, the meeting has a wider appeal. Details from David Figures on david.lbac@me.com

Strengthening leadership and partnership – Commission reports. A Commission set up by the Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, to look at the future working of churches in the North Sheffield estates area of the City recently published its Report. The Report makes detailed proposals to strengthen leadership and partnership in many spheres, for both clergy and lay members of the Church. It also recommends the appointment of a Mission and Development Coordinator – to work with all those involved in responding to the recommendations and to develop a clear strategy for mission, both through existing churches and through fresh expressions of church. The areas involved include a population of 70,000 people in Parson Cross, Shiregreen, Brightside, Wincobank, Fir Vale and Norwood and the Commission looked at how the six parishes might work even more effectively together and with partners (other denominations and agencies) in the future. The commission was chaired by Bishop David Hawtin working ecumenically with a representative from the Methodist Church. Bishop Hawtin said today: “Ours is a substantial Report – it’s not a quick read, and it doesn’t offer quick-fix solutions. Since the autumn of last year, we’ve been “out and about” among the churches, and meeting others who live in the area and share a commitment to it – and now we’re wanting to encourage churches to be increasingly ‘out and about’ too.” The report can be download here.

Publicity for events. Would you like to include your events in the UK's family & community what's on diary www.WhereCanWeGo.com. It is a way public events can be promoted at no charge - getting your details out to a wider and new audience thanks to being displayed on the Daily Telegraph's website and our own. WhereCanWeGo.com is a national service focussed on family and community events. It has exceeded all expectations - over 210,000 events posted across the country in the first two and a half years - but I guess we are still only covering the tip of the iceberg. We launched the service because we found it time-consuming to trawl endless websites to find out things to do with my own family, and because attendance at some really worthwhile events seemed disappointing. Judging by feedback we get from users and organisers, http://www.wherecanwego.com is helping solve both problems! It is getting enthusiastic response from people who can search for events by category, by date, by region, and find it a useful one-stop shop for such information. Please take a look for yourself. You can find out more under the Help/FAQs tab at www.WhereCanWeGo.com or simply enter your events under the Add Events tab off the home page.

Churches’ project receives funding: Noah's Ark Community Cafe in Ovenden, North Halifax has received £152,741 from the Big Lottery Fund to extend their counselling service to include young people. Recent experience has highlighted a need for a provision specifically for young people and the many issues they can experience including depression, bereavement and loss, abuse, dysfunctional family systems, bullying, substance abuse, self-harm and eating disorders. Natalie Wilkins, Assistant Counselling Co-ordinator Noah's Ark Community Cafe said: “This grant will bring positive change to the lives of many young people in our community and it will enable us to provide the much needed safe and confidential environment for them. Young people need their own space to explore what hurts and identify what is difficult in their lives. Counselling will allow them to express themselves through a variety of creative interventions and it will give young people the necessary tools to work through issues like depression, self-harm, low self-esteem and a host of other emotional difficulties, which can impact negatively on their development and growth into adulthood.”
